About the tour

Tour overview

The Fortresses of the Pamir route runs for 5 days and 4 nights (+1 spare day).

  • The route is around 2000 km long, most of it following the famous Pamir Highway along the Tajik–Afghan border.
  • The tour includes visits to historic sites, museums and landmarks.
  • The route is not difficult, but it calls for attentiveness and patience.
  • Altitude climbs from the start in Dushanbe at 706 m to 4344 m above sea level at the Khargush pass.
  • The route involves no long hikes on foot.
  • All overnight stays are in guesthouses and small hotels.

Note: When travelling across the Pamir it is always recommended to keep one spare day in reserve, which — by agreement with the group — can be used for rest before the road, for visiting additional sights, or for emergencies.

Day 1

Dushanbe – Khorog

  • Early departure from Dushanbe via Vakhdat, Nurek and Kulob to Darvaz;
  • Lunch in Darvaz;
  • Drive from Darvaz to Khorog, passing through Rushan (Vamar) on the way;
  • Overnight stay and dinner in Khorog.
  • Photo stops and restroom breaks are possible along the way.
  • There are several checkpoint stops; at the Shurabad border post there is a stop for document registration.
  • The drive takes up to 12 hours.

Times are approximate; the actual travel time depends on road and tunnel construction works currently underway on this stretch of the M41.

Day 2

Khorog – Wakhan Valley

  • Departure from Khorog toward the Wakhan Valley;
  • Visit to the ruins of Kah-Kaha fortress and the nearby house-museum;
  • Drive on to Yamchun fortress;
  • Lunch en route;
  • Visit to the Bibi-Fatima holy spring;
  • Overnight stay and dinner in a guesthouse.
  • Photo stops and restroom breaks are possible along the way.

The lunch break will be taken on the road wherever possible.

Day 3

Wakhan Valley

  • Drive to the village of Yamd;
  • Visit to the Muborak Wakhoni house-museum in Yamd;
  • Drive to the Buddhist stupa and a visit there;
  • Lunch en route;
  • Overnight stay and dinner in a guesthouse.

The lunch break will be taken on the road wherever possible.

If time allows, you can take a walk through the unique village of Ratm.

Day 4

Wakhan Valley – Khorog

  • Early departure toward the Wakhan corridor and the Khargush pass; a document check at the outpost on the way;
  • Joining the main M41 highway;
  • Lunch en route;
  • Crossing the Koitezak pass, past the village of Jelondy to the village of Bogev;
  • Visit to the ruins of the fortress and fire temples of the Siyohpush in Bogev;
  • Overnight stay and dinner in Khorog.

The lunch break will be taken on the road wherever possible.

Day 5

Khorog – Dushanbe

  • Departure from Khorog toward Dushanbe;
  • Visit to the Vamar fortress in Rushan;
  • Drive to Darvaz;
  • Visit to the ancient settlement of Kervon;
  • Lunch in Darvaz;
  • Drive from Darvaz to Dushanbe with a stop at the Shurabad border post for document checks; passing through Kulob, Nurek and Vakhdat;
  • Arrival in Dushanbe.
  • Photo stops and restroom breaks are possible along the way.
